Whether it is through the deep history and extensive use of Traditional Chinese Medical and Ayurvedic Herbalism or North American Organic Herbalism, many people are turning towards natural medicine such as herbs to improve their health.  Not unlike acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine focuses on correcting imbalances and restoring harmony in the  body to achieve health.  Rather than treating a particular disease, Chinese herbs are used to treat disharmonies existing in the individual.  According to TCM herbal theory, once the imbalance is corrected, healing can take place.

The use of Chinese herbs is very popular in Asian countries and is now becoming more and more commonplace in North America.  Many modern day western drugs have been developed from Chinese herbs such as the use of Ma Huang (Chinese Ephedra) in the treatment of  asthma and hay fever.  Hepatitis has been treated using Wu Wei Zi (Schizandra Fruit) and Gan Cao (Licorice Root) to name a few.  Other Chinese herbs such as goji berries, ginseng, gingko, and reishi mushrooms, have only recently become very popular in the west,  These healing herbs and many others have been used by the Chinese for hundreds and thousands of years.  Currently, modern research into various traditional herbal medicines is providing confirmation of the herbs traditional uses.

Chinese Herbal Medicine Practitioners use a variety of specific herbs to rebalance the body in the treatment of disease.  Chinese herbal medicine can have a wide variety of effects on the body.  There are herbs that strengthen and/or invigorate the circulation of the body’s Qi or vital energy, nourish and move the blood, calm tension, regulate hormones, strengthen and cleanse internal organs, clear infection or inflammation, etc.   Though acupuncture works to accomplish many of these same objectives, herbal medicine adds natural chemicals to the body and can have an effect over a period of time.  There are over three hundred commonly used Chinese herbs many of which have a history of use going back at thousands of years.
